Man-Bear-Pig: Pwned by the data

We are about to find out what happens when a populace discovers that the foundational data supporting their belief in Global Warming depends on a Y2K computational error.  Michael Asher writes:

My earlier column this week detailed the work of a volunteer team to assess problems with US temperature data used for climate modeling. One of these people is Steve McIntyre, who operates the site climateaudit.org. While inspecting historical temperature graphs, he noticed a strange discontinuity, or “jump” in many locations, all occurring around the time of January, 2000.

These graphs were created by NASA’s Reto Ruedy and James Hansen (who shot to fame when he accused the administration of trying to censor his views on climate change). Hansen refused to provide McKintyre with the algorithm used to generate graph data, so McKintyre reverse-engineered it. The result appeared to be a Y2K bug in the handling of the raw data.

McKintyre notified the pair of the bug; Ruedy replied and acknowledged the problem as an “oversight” that would be fixed in the next data refresh.

NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the events.

The effect of the correction on global temperatures is minor (some 1-2% less warming than originally thought), but the effect on the US global warming propaganda machine could be huge.

In fact, the total warming that the Global Warming cultists claim is somewhere around 1 or 2%, so this computational error could account for every bit of it.

Anthony Watts’ tables are instructive. First, the old top ten hottest year table:

Year Old New
1998 1.24 1.23
1934 1.23 1.25
2006 1.23 1.13
1921 1.12 1.15
1931 1.08 1.08
1999 0.94 0.93
1953 0.91 0.90
2001 0.90 0.76
1990 0.88 0.87
1938 0.85 0.86

Here are the new top ten years.

Year Old New
1934 1.23 1.25
1998 1.24 1.23
1921 1.12 1.15
2006 1.23 1.13
1931 1.08 1.08
1999 0.94 0.93
1953 0.91 0.90
1990 0.88 0.87
1938 0.85 0.86
1939 0.84 0.85

That is very different.

Somebody get Al Gore on the phone. It’s OK. He can keep his huge monthly electrical bill and his three mansions, and keep on flying around on a private jet. But he has to pick a new topic for his speechifying, cuz his old one was just disproved.

  1. I am a regular reader of your article. And I am very impress with your blog upon Global Warming. Now I am also write a blog upon effects and causes of Global Warming. This blog is collection of news & reviews like the study found that global warming since 1985 has been caused neither by an increase in solar radiation nor by a decrease in the flux of galactic cosmic rays. Some researchers had also suggested that the latter might influence global warming because the rays trigger cloud formation.

  2. “We are about to find out what happens when a populace discovers that the foundational data supporting their belief in Global Warming depends on a Y2K computational error. ”

I couldn’t find anything in my local paper (http://www.jsonline.com).

I have been home sick all day and have had the news on and off. Nothing.

So, I think this will be shrugged off.

This is really about science anyways. This is politics.

Unless blogs can swarm and force the MSM to report this.
