Human Organ Harvesting in China

On January 31, 2007 a new report was released in Canada concerning the Chinese harvesting of organs from unwilling humans, specifically political prisoners who were imprisoned for their religion. The Falun Gong is a native anti-communist Chinese spiritual cult that was outlawed in 1999. One of the most remarkable characteristics of Falun Gong is their health. They exercise regularly, take care of themselves, and eat right, and thus they all have very healthy bodies.

China directs its ire especially at the Falun Gong, Christians, Tibetans, Buddhists, and minorities. But it is Falun Gong that receives special attention. Those of Falun Gong who self-identified were treated viciously after the famous Tianamen Square protests. Once arrested, they were tortured and taken to their home districts where their family members and co-workers were also singled out for having been exposed to the Falun Gong contagion.

Patients receiving harvested organs such as livers and kidneys come from China and abroad. They are told to report to surgery just scant hours before going under the knife. Often conducted at night, surgeons and attending nurses remain anonymous while patients are not allowed to see any documentation that the organs received are from volunteers. In the cold calculation of China’s ever more prosperous communist masters, the transaction of organs harvested from prisoners (presumably having had the organs removed while they were still alive) is an merely an efficient and profitable use of a human resource that would otherwise go to waste.

There is little evidence left of these crimes. The bodies of victims are cremated and no word is given to loved ones of their disposal. The operating rooms where the murders and transplants occur look like any others. (source)

About a year ago, on April 20, 2006, Wang Wenyi, who held a press pass from the Epoch Times, stood up at a welcoming ceremony for Chinese president Hu Jintao and shouted at him in Chinese about the killings in Hu’s China. Americans apologized for the crazy Chinese lady yelling at Hu, but for those who looked into the back story it was clear why Wang was upset. She is a doctor and a Falun Gong devotee, and she knows all about the Organ Harvesting practices of the Chinese government.

In the May 8, 2006 issue of the Weekly Standard, Ethan Gutmann wrote Why Wang Wenyi Was Shouting, that told this story:

Back in 1988, a hospital was constructed on a 21,087-square meter plot (about five acres) a few miles outside of Shenyang, in a satellite city called Sujiatun. It’s pronounced Soo-jah-tyun, and you might want get to know that name.

It happened that the hospital–now the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine–had a large basement and an inconspicuous back door.

In 2001, some employees in the hospital’s accounting and logistics department noticed that the hospital’s requests for food, rubber gloves, toilet paper, and surgical equipment suddenly went way, way up. The food and surgical tools would disappear, the trash would get hauled away, yet it was unclear how they were being used. At one point in 2002, the accounting department estimated the logistical increase represented a whopping discrepancy of thousands of patients.

One accountant–called Annie in the Falun Gong literature on the scandal–was aware of the supply mystery, but what concerned her far more was the behavior of her husband, a surgeon at Sujiatun. On the surface, the couple was doing fine. He was bringing home increasingly large amounts of cash, and his job appeared secure. The hospital had even issued him a dedicated cell-phone, which would ring at odd hours and send him back to Sujiatun. Yet when he came home to bed, he had violent nightmares and would wake bathed in sweat. During the day, he was constantly on edge, preoccupied, even fearful of his wife’s touch.

It took a year, but eventually he confessed to her: The accounting staff was right. There were extra “patients” in the subterranean depths of the hospital, and some makeshift operating rooms down there, too. When his cell phone rang, it meant that a “patient” had been wheeled in and given a small dose of anesthesia (the hospital had a limited supply). Then he and the other doctors–some hired from the outside, each with a specialty, all constantly on call–would come in and remove the patient’s kidneys, skin tissue, corneas, and other organs, seemingly to order. The remains of the “patient” would then be carried down to the old boiler, which doubled as an incinerator. The workers who disposed of the bodies–sometimes still alive–helped themselves to the occasional watch, necklace, or ring as a kind of tip.

The “patients”–men and women, old and young–were all Falun Gong practitioners. It was so much easier that way–no arrest warrants, no need for paper work. If a diagnosis had to be stipulated for some reason, the entry read “mentally destroyed,” and the cause of death “suicide.” The doctors’ silence was bought with generous financial rewards, the assurance that they were simply “cleansing” for the party, and the vague threat implicit in the observation that if you had already done some of these operations then what difference would a few more make? Buck up!

And so goes the technique of convincing, turning, and hardening a man to evil. This process is the heart of totalitarianism, for any totalitarian system transforms willing men into little tyrants and willing killers.

Update 2/3/07: A commenter from the San Francisco area objected to this article on the basis that Falun Gong is a cult, anti-gay, and other bad things. This seems to go back to a controversy involving the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ resolution that condemned the Chinese government’s persecution of Falun Gong. We all must be very careful to examine issues for what they are.

Chinese officials have admitted that human organs removed from “executed prisoners” are sold to wealthy westerners for transplants. They have also admitted to persecuting and imprisoning Falun Gong. How exactly do they execute the prisoners, and who are the prisoners whom they execute for transplants? Evidence is accumulating that the Chinese government is dissecting imprisoned Falun Gong members while they are still alive, and selling their organs for money. This accusation is a bombshell, and if true would rank the Chinese officials involved with Hitler, Mengele, Idi Amin, and the most evil despots of history.

Preaching against homosexuality pales in the balance.

While moral or demographic teachings against homosexuality may make homosexuals and their supporters feel uncomfortable or outraged, teachings are not the same as murder, or equivalent, or of the same moral and ethical weight. Does protected (in the U.S.) political speech, insults, or even “hate speech” carry the same weight as murdering opponents? This argument against supporting the Falun Gong is morally bankrupt. It illuminates the myopia and narcissism of the arguer, who believes that his or her own personal, daily issues with social acceptance trump the murder of other humans.

  1. I find it funny how easily a “doctor” can be duped into abandoning her medical learning and joining a cult that advocates the slow and painful eradication of gays and lesbians. Or perhaps she was paid. Guess we will never know, and should just take everything we see at face value, eh?

  2. Care to elaborate about the cult that “advocates the slow and painful eradication of gays and lesbians”?

  3. I came across this piece from Transplant Connect and I learned a lot about the Chinese ideology, which I don’t agree with by the way. Regardless of the Falun Gong’s belief system, labelled as a cult in China, and known as a spirituality in the free world, they are now being faced with genocide. Can the brutal dictatorship get away with that — only if we let them. Who’s next?

    Excerpt: The staff members of the civilian and military hospitals controlled by the CCP have developed a much distorted sense of humanity. Doctors are supposed to follow an ethical code where they help to preserve and save people’s lives, but this ideology has been challenged by the theory of money worship under the influence of the CCP’s culture. This has transformed these doctors, both intentionally and unintentionally, not only into victims but also into criminals against humanity.
    Especially during the past seven years, some doctors have been actively or passively involved with the exterminatory persecution of Falun Gong by the CCP. Those who were involved were tricked by, and agreed with, the CCP’s demonising propaganda against Falun Gong. These same people then threw away their humanity by removing the organs of Falun Gong practitioners. They have committed the most atrocious crime against humanity in the 21st century.

  4. Wolf, the Falun Gong propaganda David Kilgour’s promoting has been discredited by multiple undercover investigation?

    As you can see, the hospital Falun Gong accused is partly owned by a Malaysian health care company and is subject to oversight beyond Chinese authority.

  5. Wolf, Good points.

    Charles aka Bobby,

    Take a look at BBC’s undercover investigation, followed by posts from Harry Wu’s website.

    Organ sales ‘thriving’ in China
    BBC- The sale of organs taken from executed prisoners appears to be thriving in China, an undercover investigation by the BBC has found….One hospital said it could provide a liver at a cost of £50,000 ($94,400), with the chief surgeon confirming an executed prisoner could be the donor….In April 2006, top British transplant surgeons condemned the practice as unacceptable and a breach of human rights.

    and this “Video: Sky TV goes under cover” is precious

    http://en.epochtimes.com/news/6-4-26/40842.html

    “This report verifies that:
    · organs for transplantation are very plentiful in China;
    · they are available on demand;
    · the organs are supplied from prisoners;
    · the prisoners are killed after they are found to match a patient who is awaiting a donor organ.

    The nurse who welcomes him at the hospital cheerfully explains that their hospital can get organs “the fastest” because it has the ” best connections.” Waghorn explains the hospital publicly admits its links to China’s paramilitary police.”

    China officially admits executed prisoners are the basis of organ trafficking

    BEIJING — After years of denial, China has acknowledged that most of the human organs used in transplants here are taken from executed prisoners and that many of the recipients are foreigners who pay hefty sums to avoid a long wait.

    BTW Bobby your statement about the Malaysian Hospital is pure fiction….
    The Ministry of Health Malaysia report can be found at http://crc.gov.my/clinicalTrial/documents/Proposal/TCM_Stroke%20TrialProtocol%20synopsis.pdf, which you provided on other blogs. The Malaysian Government mentioned that it was a clinical trial titled, “A multi-center, open label trial to demonstrate the clinical effectiveness and safety of combined Traditional Chinese and Modern medicines in patients with recent stroke”. Nothing at all to do with organs (or harvesting).…& Bobby you tried so hard to mislead everyone with this open statement: “As you can see, the hospital Falun Gong accused is partly owned by a Malaysian health care company and is subject to oversight beyond Chinese authority.”

    But the best official report is that of Kilgour/Matas “Bloody Harvest” http://organharvestinvestigation.net

    Let’s hope that the government of the free world will soon wake up and dare to stop China from murdering its own people for organs-for profit.

  6. I forgot to include this last time. This is an excerpt from a hearing in Washington DC last September where Kilgour/Matas presented the first report.

    Chairman of the US Congressional Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Condemns the CCP’s Live Organ Harvesting (Photo)

    http://practitioners.blogspot.com/2006/10/us-congressman-condemns-points-out.html

    The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime is accused of harvesting organs from detained Falun Gong practitioners for sale to wealthy patients. Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee, pointed out that this atrocity is a great evil…..Former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia and Pacific and MP David Kilgour and Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas recently stated before the committee that according to their investigation, the CCP regime’s harvesting organs from living Falun Gong practitioners indeed exists.

    That sounds pretty official to me.

  10. Quotation from an analysis of Falun Gong report

    So here, I am going to do a dissecting exercise about what a FLG “negative report” looks like. I began by trying to read up on the background of the incident at the White House front lawn (Hu Jintao At The White House) when FLG follower Wang Wenyi was shouting about the body organ thefts taking place at the Shenyang military hospital. That was big news everywhere, but I wondered how many people actually pursued that story to any depth. So I googled the news item and I was brought to this DJY/ET page titled Military Doctor Reveals Process of CCP’s Organ Harvesting from FLG Practitioners (May 1, 2006) attributed to the anonymous doctor at the Shenyang military hospital. Here are the paragraphs of interest:

    3. Why such a Big Discrepancy between Publicly Announced Figures and Reality?

    Many people pay a lot of attention to the transplant statistics announced by the government. Actually, “underground” organ transplants are many times that of the number publicized by the government. For example, if the government says that there are 30,000 cases a year, then the real number is about 110,000. There is an abundance of organ sources, and this is another reason why the prices for organ transplants have decreased. Many hospitals under the jurisdiction of the military, while reporting some transplants to the central government and the public, are actually conducting a large number of organ transplants in secret. The real number is much higher than government statistics. As I said before, in the eyes of these people [who are doing the operations], the people whose organs are being removed are no longer regarded as human, but animals. When doing it for the first or second time, some of them feel shaky and nervous. But after thousands of operations, everything is changed. They become numb about extracting organs from live people and cremating live people.

    Since 2000, more than 85% of the world’s live organ transplants have been done in China. This number is from a document within the Military Commission. A few people were promoted to generals for the “accomplishments” in this area.

    At the bottom of that page, one can click to read the original article in Chinese. Here are the original paragraphs of interest.

    A comparison of the Chinese- and English-language versions shows that the English translation has omitted a section. In the following, I have translated the missing section and put it in bold red(I changed it to bracket).

    ( Everybody knows that China exports many products, but among the export products of China, there is also a large exporting of live bodies. The so-called exporting of live bodies comes about when overseas forces take the people who fit the requirements and sell them overseas like merchandise. The organ transplants takes place overseas. Afterwards, the bodies of the donors are destroyed in the same way (note: China has overseas organizations which specialize in handling the corpses of the live organ donors, and many overseas Chinese embassies participate in this). Within the category of exports related to human bodies, China leads the world in total value. All of these exported live bodies have faked documents indicating consent. The details of the process are not know. It is known that about 1,000 bodies were exported in year 2005.

    China has formed a huge organ trading network with the world and China is the center of the international organ trade. )Since 2000, more than 85% of the world’s live organ transplants have been done in China. This number is from a document within the Military Commission. A few people were promoted to generals for the “accomplishments” in this area.

    Wow! Live Chinese persons are being exported overseas for transplant operations and their bodies are then disposed of by special squads inside the Chinese embassies! That missing paragraph would have been sensational news all over the world. Unfortunately, it is so sensational that the English-reading world is unlikely to believe that such a global operation exists without ever being detected (as in, Do you think the FBI does not have spies inside the Chinese embassy or otherwise not conduct surveillance on the embassy staff?), so it is best to hide it in order to protect the credibility of the anonymous Shenyang military doctor. Meanwhile, according to Jiao Guobiao, it is important for the people in mainland China to receive these types of “bad news” in order to balance things out.

    I belong to the first type of people who no longer want to waste a moment in life scrutinizing FLG news reports. The target of this essay is really about the second type of people who apparently know about this but choose to either ignore or rationalize it for strategic reasons. The problem with this approach is that nobody respects or trusts you anymore.
