On January 31, 2007 a new report was released in Canada concerning the Chinese harvesting of organs from unwilling humans, specifically political prisoners who were imprisoned for their religion. The Falun Gong is a native anti-communist Chinese spiritual cult that was outlawed in 1999. One of the most remarkable characteristics of Falun Gong is their health. They exercise regularly, take care of themselves, and eat right, and thus they all have very healthy bodies.
China directs its ire especially at the Falun Gong, Christians, Tibetans, Buddhists, and minorities. But it is Falun Gong that receives special attention. Those of Falun Gong who self-identified were treated viciously after the famous Tianamen Square protests. Once arrested, they were tortured and taken to their home districts where their family members and co-workers were also singled out for having been exposed to the Falun Gong contagion.
Patients receiving harvested organs such as livers and kidneys come from China and abroad. They are told to report to surgery just scant hours before going under the knife. Often conducted at night, surgeons and attending nurses remain anonymous while patients are not allowed to see any documentation that the organs received are from volunteers. In the cold calculation of China’s ever more prosperous communist masters, the transaction of organs harvested from prisoners (presumably having had the organs removed while they were still alive) is an merely an efficient and profitable use of a human resource that would otherwise go to waste.
There is little evidence left of these crimes. The bodies of victims are cremated and no word is given to loved ones of their disposal. The operating rooms where the murders and transplants occur look like any others. (source)
About a year ago, on April 20, 2006, Wang Wenyi, who held a press pass from the Epoch Times, stood up at a welcoming ceremony for Chinese president Hu Jintao and shouted at him in Chinese about the killings in Hu’s China. Americans apologized for the crazy Chinese lady yelling at Hu, but for those who looked into the back story it was clear why Wang was upset. She is a doctor and a Falun Gong devotee, and she knows all about the Organ Harvesting practices of the Chinese government.
In the May 8, 2006 issue of the Weekly Standard, Ethan Gutmann wrote Why Wang Wenyi Was Shouting, that told this story:
Back in 1988, a hospital was constructed on a 21,087-square meter plot (about five acres) a few miles outside of Shenyang, in a satellite city called Sujiatun. It’s pronounced Soo-jah-tyun, and you might want get to know that name.
It happened that the hospital–now the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine–had a large basement and an inconspicuous back door.
In 2001, some employees in the hospital’s accounting and logistics department noticed that the hospital’s requests for food, rubber gloves, toilet paper, and surgical equipment suddenly went way, way up. The food and surgical tools would disappear, the trash would get hauled away, yet it was unclear how they were being used. At one point in 2002, the accounting department estimated the logistical increase represented a whopping discrepancy of thousands of patients.
One accountant–called Annie in the Falun Gong literature on the scandal–was aware of the supply mystery, but what concerned her far more was the behavior of her husband, a surgeon at Sujiatun. On the surface, the couple was doing fine. He was bringing home increasingly large amounts of cash, and his job appeared secure. The hospital had even issued him a dedicated cell-phone, which would ring at odd hours and send him back to Sujiatun. Yet when he came home to bed, he had violent nightmares and would wake bathed in sweat. During the day, he was constantly on edge, preoccupied, even fearful of his wife’s touch.
It took a year, but eventually he confessed to her: The accounting staff was right. There were extra “patients” in the subterranean depths of the hospital, and some makeshift operating rooms down there, too. When his cell phone rang, it meant that a “patient” had been wheeled in and given a small dose of anesthesia (the hospital had a limited supply). Then he and the other doctors–some hired from the outside, each with a specialty, all constantly on call–would come in and remove the patient’s kidneys, skin tissue, corneas, and other organs, seemingly to order. The remains of the “patient” would then be carried down to the old boiler, which doubled as an incinerator. The workers who disposed of the bodies–sometimes still alive–helped themselves to the occasional watch, necklace, or ring as a kind of tip.
The “patients”–men and women, old and young–were all Falun Gong practitioners. It was so much easier that way–no arrest warrants, no need for paper work. If a diagnosis had to be stipulated for some reason, the entry read “mentally destroyed,” and the cause of death “suicide.” The doctors’ silence was bought with generous financial rewards, the assurance that they were simply “cleansing” for the party, and the vague threat implicit in the observation that if you had already done some of these operations then what difference would a few more make? Buck up!
And so goes the technique of convincing, turning, and hardening a man to evil. This process is the heart of totalitarianism, for any totalitarian system transforms willing men into little tyrants and willing killers.
Update 2/3/07: A commenter from the San Francisco area objected to this article on the basis that Falun Gong is a cult, anti-gay, and other bad things. This seems to go back to a controversy involving the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ resolution that condemned the Chinese government’s persecution of Falun Gong. We all must be very careful to examine issues for what they are.
Chinese officials have admitted that human organs removed from “executed prisoners” are sold to wealthy westerners for transplants. They have also admitted to persecuting and imprisoning Falun Gong. How exactly do they execute the prisoners, and who are the prisoners whom they execute for transplants? Evidence is accumulating that the Chinese government is dissecting imprisoned Falun Gong members while they are still alive, and selling their organs for money. This accusation is a bombshell, and if true would rank the Chinese officials involved with Hitler, Mengele, Idi Amin, and the most evil despots of history.
Preaching against homosexuality pales in the balance.
While moral or demographic teachings against homosexuality may make homosexuals and their supporters feel uncomfortable or outraged, teachings are not the same as murder, or equivalent, or of the same moral and ethical weight. Does protected (in the U.S.) political speech, insults, or even “hate speech” carry the same weight as murdering opponents? This argument against supporting the Falun Gong is morally bankrupt. It illuminates the myopia and narcissism of the arguer, who believes that his or her own personal, daily issues with social acceptance trump the murder of other humans.
